Sewing Instruction: My two little birds

My first time trying to teach someone to sew should involve a simple, two dimensional project. A tote bag, maybe. Did I do that? No. No, I did not. I chose pants, likely the most challenging (with a high potential for frustration) piece of clothing to fit and sew. I flattened the learning curve for them a bit by showing them how to self-draft and sew a pair of loose, flannel lounge pants. A forgiving approach, indeed. We just dove in, no real instruction around how to thread a sewing machine or what all the machine's buttons and levers do. To be fair, with this particular little bird (#2, on the left) we were trying to accomplish both self-drafting AND sewing in a single, multi-hour session. Because I did not take photos of the efforts of little bird #1 (on the right), their lounge pants will not make an appearace here (plus, we/me kind of petered out and never finished them). Here is little bird #2 cutting out fabric. Did I get a photo of them sewing or wearing their pants? Also, no. But look...look how cute sewing students are:
Bird #1, right (Ayla!). Bird #2, left (Ollie!).
Bonus photo of my own self-drafted, flannel lounge pants. The students inspired me!
